Laurel, Edmonton

Edmonton is the capital city of the Canadian province of Alberta and is the center of the Edmonton Metropolitan Region. One of the major areas in Edmonton that has become increasingly popular over the years is Laurel.

Laurel is a family neighborhood in Edmonton with a wide range of single family homes and multi-family homes available at affordable prices. Laurel has a six-acre storm lake and this in addition to its green space and a central neighborhood park is some of the amazing attractions of the community.

Established in 2007 through the adoption of the Laurel Neighbourhood Structure Plan, Laurel was originally identified as Neighbourhood 4 within The Meadows Area Structure Plan (ASP). According to City of Edmonton’s municipal census done in 2012, Laurel had a population of just above 1,600 living in over 740 dwellings.

 

Laurel is one of the fastest growing communities in Edmonton and probably the whole of Canada and this is not surprising considering the attractions in the community, some of which are briefly highlighted as follows.

The Meadows Community Recreation Centre

 

The Meadows Community Recreation Centre is designed to offer the people of Laurel and visitors amazing recreational services in one convenient location. The center offers a wide range of classes to suit the needs of residents.

The center brings different people together in one location, allowing them to enjoy recreation, sport, as well as social and cultural activities. Covering 234,419 square-foot, the facility is strategically located within the Meadows District Park, providing outdoor and indoor recreational opportunities for everyone regardless of their age group or abilities. Meadows Community Recreation Centre has, therefore, become a one-stop solutions provider for all relaxation needs.

RioCan Meadows

RioCan Meadows is another major attraction of Laurel. Located at the intersection of Whitemud Drive and 17 Street in Edmonton, the center has 35 units on a space covering 409,184 sq. ft. that feature top retailers like Home Depot, Staples, PetSmart, and Winners.

Some of the features of RioCan Meadows are ample parking, easy accessibility, and a great mix of national retailers.

Mill Woods Town Centre

The Mill Woods Town Centre is an amazing shopping center located in south Edmonton, Alberta in the neighborhood of Mill Woods. The center has more than 80 retailers including Canadian Tire, Shoppers Drug Mart, and CO-OP.
The Mill Woods Town Centre dates as far back as the late seventies and was originally designed to give residents easy access to major department stores.

Mill Woods Golf Course

The Mill Woods Golf Course is the first of such facility in Laurel, operated by MCARFA (Mill Woods Cultural and Recreational Facility Association), who was charged with the responsibility of building and operating operate recreational and cultural facilities for the Mill Woods Community and the City of Edmonton.

South Edmonton Common

South Edmonton Common has been described as Edmonton’s “power shopping center and entertainment hot spot.” The flagship shopping center is spread over 320 acres, containing over 2.3 million square feet of dining, shopping and entertainment space. South Edmonton Common remains one of the largest open-air retail developments in North America housing top brand names, giving shoppers an opportunity to rejuvenate themselves at one of the fine or casual dining restaurants.

The center has something for everyone regardless of their age group making it a one-stop shopping and entertainment experience.

Mill woods Rec Centre

The Mill Woods Recreation Centre is designed to offer recreation and fitness experiences for all ages and abilities. The multi-amenity facility houses a fitness center, 1 Squash court, 2 Racquetball courts, which is sometimes used for Badminton or Walleyball, a wide range of dry and aquatic drop-in classes and a pool area. It also features a hot tub, a dive tank with waterslide, and a dry sauna.

Other amenities in the center area double arena, offering shinny hockey and public skating and multi-purpose rooms for meetings or party rentals.
